Everybody knew he had auditioned for On the Waterfront—the role went to Marlon Brando—and tested with James Dean to play his brother in East of Eden. During the screen test they had improvised, and Dean murmured, “Kiss me!” Newman whispered back, “Can’t here,” and then they broke up laughing. (Richard Davalos would play the part.)
