"Everybody’s searching desperately for business model innovation: Detroit, newspapers, record labels, banks. No market is left untouched, no value proposition sacrosanct. Yet, the best business model in the world is also the simplest: make stuff that’s insanely great."
I agree wholeheartedly. At a (really fucking awesome) party at a completely amazing house in Williamsburg on Tuesday night, I found myself sitting at the kitchen table with three other women. Like myself, one has a traditional dayjob, the other works in media (specifically photography), and I think the third might work retail, but I didn’t pry because she was rather quiet. We were talking about what we all do outside of work. As many of you know, Cindy and I knit. At this party, I spent a lot of time answering questions about why we aren’t currently offering classes, why the custom order business is slow, when patterns are coming out, what the level of difficulty will be, what’s appropriate for people who are new to knitting, etc. All in all, it was a nice conversation, but what I came away with at the end of it is that my core belief in what I do is based on a pretty simple principle. I make beautiful things that are intelligently and lovingly constructed, meant to fit specific bodies. And I want to show others how to do the same while finding their own way. The end result of expertise developed from passion, good instruction and good materials is “insane greatness,” or quality work, even if it’s very different than the example provided. Hi y’all, I’m Pinkie, and I like to make awesome stuff.
