Amy Lowell, excerpt from “Chinoiseries” (1916)
I muttered “Jesus” when I read it.

Oh my goodness! This was part of my poetry interpretation repertoire from high school speech tournaments! I haven’t thought of it in years. I would always truck out the Amy Lowell programme when I would make it into the semi-finals or finals of an event, as doing so always inevitably meant that I would place last in my room. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed that luscious slice of failure on my own terms. I never wanted the damn plaques. I just wanted somewhere to go on the weekends. I wanted to read ripe verses to no one in empty, echoing and dreary schoolrooms on Saturday afternoons.

ten songs that saved your life: james murphy -

Informative and completely anticlimactic.

I started a new job yesterday, so that’s why I’ve been a bit AWOL from this location and the Jukebox. BBL!

“… Not to mention that “raw and bruised” in the context of well-loved college graduates floating around Greenpoint may just mean that Lena Dunham is a little chubbier than the women we usually see in sex scenes on television.” —

Reading this Katie Roiphe article was A Poor Decision.

Wow, well. Like we should be surprised that Katie Roiphe, as ever, misses the point entirely? I know we all knew she doesn’t have an empathic bone in her body, but, just … the presumption and out-of-touch-ness of this entire piece! I’m a bit speechless, really.

Alamo Drafthouse Goes to New York! -

The most important news, ever.

You’ve said it’s important to throw a party every day – do you mean that?

Absolutely, yes. Most people tell you there are certain moments you should celebrate in life. For example, the weekend coming so you should party on a Friday. Or your birthday or New Year’s Eve. But what if you’re excited about being alive every day? Can’t you be in that celebratory state every moment you’re not dead? That became my theory and it became my mission to prove you can party every day.

What about when you’re having an off day and feeling down?

That’s when it’s even more important. That’s the best blessing or gift this whole adventure has given me: if I have felt sad or frustrated, this is the most uplifting thing I can ever imagine doing. The music itself is like a healing powerball of electric joy. No matter what mood I’m in, when the music takes over it gets my perspective back of how amazing it is to not be dead.

Selena died 17 years ago this weekend. These are her seven most important songs.

I’m surprised by how accurate this is. I’d replace “I Could Fall in Love” with “La Carcacha,” though.

Nooooooooo nothing replaces “I Could Fall in Love”!

Agreed. Though, I’d make it an even eight to shoehorn in “Fotos y Recuerdos”.
Relatedly, I tried to read the People en Español special annual Selena tribute issue at Target the other day and started crying and had to put it back on the shelf.
